A Storytelling-Based Approach to Dementia Caregiving
When my father developed severe dementia after a stroke, my family experienced the grief, helplessness, and emotional isolation familiar to so many caregivers and families living with dementia.
Over time, we slowly felt as though we were losing the person we loved.
Then something extraordinary happened.
Late in his illness, my father experienced a brief two-day “awakening,” where he regained clarity, recognition, gratitude, humor, emotional connection, and a continued desire to live. During that time, he expressed love and appreciation for his family and showed awareness of important family milestones we believed he no longer understood. He also expressed an appreciation for life and that he wanted to live.
That experience changed my life.
It taught me that people living with dementia may understand more than we think, still appreciate life, and still value human connection.
That experience became the inspiration behind Caregiver Connection.
What Is Caregiver Connection?
Caregiver Connection is a storytelling-based caregiver support approach focused on:
- Acceptance
- Inclusion
- Emotional Presence
- Meaningful Human Connection
- Hope for Caregivers and Families
It is not a medical program or clinical treatment.
Instead, it is a human-centered philosophy designed to help caregivers and families remain emotionally connected with loved ones living with dementia — even during the later stages of cognitive decline.
The approach is shared through:
- My memoir, Awakenings in Real Life
- Podcast storytelling
- Articles and interviews
- Public conversations about caregiving and dementia
The Core Messages of Caregiver Connection
1. People Living with Dementia Still Appreciate Life and want to live
One of the most powerful lessons my father’s awakening taught our family was that even in the throes of dementia, he still appreciated life and wanted to live.
That realization changed how we viewed caregiving.
Instead of focusing only on what had been lost, we began focusing more intentionally on moments of connection, joy, love, and inclusion.
2. A Person Living with Dementia May Understand More Than We Think
My father demonstrated awareness of family events and milestones that occurred during years we believed he understood very little.
That experience taught us something profound:
We may never fully know what a person living with dementia understands emotionally, internally, or spiritually.
This message encourages caregivers and families to:
- Continue talking with loved ones
- Continue sharing family experiences
- Continue expressing love and appreciation
- Continue treating the person with dignity and emotional inclusion
3. Inclusion Matters
Throughout my father’s dementia journey, we continued including him in family activities, outings, movies, meals, conversations, and experiences.
Even when memory faded. Even when communication became difficult. Even when it was emotionally painful.
Caregiver Connection encourages families to continue including loved ones in life whenever possible.
Because connection still matters. Presence still matters. And meaningful moments can still happen.
4. Acceptance Is Essential
One of the most important lessons I learned during caregiving was acceptance.
Not giving up. Not losing hope. But learning to meet your loved one where they are.
Acceptance means:
- Being present with your loved one
- Loving them at every stage of the journey
- Recognizing frustration without guilt
- Giving yourself grace as a caregiver
- Continuing to do the best you can
Caregiving is emotionally exhausting. No caregiver is perfect. Caregiver Connection encourages compassion not only for the loved one living with dementia, but also for the caregiver.
